Life as a homesteader seems like it would be easy but it isn't. As a teenager you have much responsibility and as a girl you helped cook, clean, take care of the children, sew clothes, pump the water, collect flowers, and more. As a boy you farm, cut out sod, check the hens, feed the animals, milk the cows, lay out hay, and more. We live in houses that are called "soddies" because they are made completely out of sod. The bad thing about this is that ANYTHING could get in rattlesnakes, spiders, bugs, and mosquitoes. But the mosquitoes show NO mercy they carry disease and like to spread it to us and the animals. Soddies were only $10 to make because they were not made of wood, steel, or bricks. Also it is hot and dry so the air is pretty gross to breathe in. The cows don't like to come in for dinner so our new sheepdog Harold has to chase them in. The cows eat only grass and our bread scraps. Amy Rail and I miss you dearly, Mom and Pop say hello!
